Hello. Frisco here. Ansley Carol Burnette, who wrote my story, volunteers at Castaway Critters Pet Rescue in Blairsville, Georgia. Although I am a fictional dog, many real dogs much like me have lived at Castaway Critters while waiting to find their forever families.
Castaway Critters is a private, no-kill animal rescue shelter. That means that the shelter gets no money from the government and that all of the animals there are kept alive and healthy until they get homes. Castaway doesn't euthenize any animals. In fact, Castaway often rescues dogs and cats who are about to be euthenized at public shelters.
The dedicated volunteers at Castaway work hard to raise money to keep the shelter running. They pay a nice lady to help clean and care for the animals 32 hours a week, but all the rest of the money goes straight to the animals. Expenses for the animals include rent, food, vet bills (including spaying and neutering, heartworm checks and treatment, shots, etc.), bedding, and toys.
Volunteers spend countless hours cleaning the shelter, caring for the animals, raising money, taking the animals to local adoptions, and doing follow-up visits to be sure the animals all have great homes. Castaway also works with Saving Shelter Pets to transport dogs to shelters in the Northeast, who then adopt them out to families waiting for pets.
